ABSTRACT We report on the interaction between common bottlenose dolphins, Tursiops truncatus (Montagu, 1821) and cast net fishermen in southern coast of Brazil. The fishery was monitored in the mouth of the Tramandaí River Estuary to investigate the seasonality of catches and their relationships with a set of variables: presence/absence and number of bottlenose dolphins, fishing area, temperature, salinity, wind and water flow direction in the channel. The mullet, Mugil liza Valenciennes, 1836 is the target species and was the dominant fish in the catches (77% of total catch; 50% in frequency; 0.2 ind. x f-1). The use of GLM models helped to reveal that the number of the bottlenose dolphins, time of year (months) and spatial variation of fishing activity were the main factors explaining the presence and abundance of mullet in the fishermen’s catches. The presences of bottlenose dolphins in the fishing area raise the probability of fishermen catch larger number of mullets with smaller fishing effort. However, the size of the mullet is influenced basically by seasonality. The mullets are the “currency” of bottlenose dolphins and fishermen interaction. There are reasons for concern about the sustainability of the southern Brazilian M. liza stock, once the decrease of this fishing resource can lead this rare and traditional fishery to the extinction.

ABSTRACT The Remo flounder, Oncopterus darwinii Steindachner, 1874 is a small Pleuronectidae (~ 250 mm TL) distributed in the warm-temperate zone from Santa Catarina (28°S - Brazil) to the Gulf of San Matías (42°S - Argentina). We studied the occurrence and diet of juveniles of this flatfish (85% < 100 mm TL) for one year (August 2009 to July 2010) in a southern Brazilian sandy beach. Individuals were much more common in spring and early summer than in the other seasons. Of the 758 individuals analyzed, only 69 (9.1%) were found with empty stomachs. The Remo flounder fed predominantly on small crustaceans (gammarid amphipods, mysids and the hipiidae Emerita brasiliensis Schmitt, 1935) and no seasonal differences were found in the composition of the diet of this flatfish. However, variations in the Index of Relative Importance (IRI) were found among seasons, which most likely can be explained by a decrease in the availability of favored food items throughout the year. The pattern of distribution of O. darwinii indicates that southern Brazilian sandy beaches are used as nursery ground for this species.

RESUMO Duas espécies de tainha simpátricas, Mugil curema e M. liza, usam o estuário do Rio Tramandaí como zona de berçário. Quando espécies do mesmo gênero são simpátricas, vários mecanismos podem permitir sua coexistência, incluindo segregação espacial ou temporal que resultam no uso distinto dos recursos pelos quais elas competem. Para investigar a segregação espacial nós usamos a análise de elementos químicos em otólitos inferidos por espectrometria de massas através de plasma indutivamente acoplado com amostras extraídas a laser (LA-ICPMS). Mugil curema está associada a águas de alta salinidade podendo ser classificada como Marinho Migrante sub-categoria Marinha estuarina-oportunista. Mugil liza está associada a águas menos salinas, devendo ser classificada como Marinha Migrante sub-categoria Estuarina Dependente. A variação intraespecífica no uso do habitat estuarino indica um comportamento migratório mais complexo que o previsto em tainhas.

ABSTRACT Two sympatric species of marine mullets, Mugil curema and M. liza, use the rio Tramandaí Estuary as nursing grounds. When two closely related species are sympatric, various mechanisms may permit their coexistence, including spatial or temporal segregation that results in the divergent use of the resources for which they compete. To investigate the spatial segregation, we used otolith chemistry inferred through laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. Our results indicate that in the rio Tramandaí Estuary, M. curema is associated with high salinity waters and can be classified as a Marine Migrant in the Marine Estuarine-opportunist subcategory. Mugil liza is associated with lower salinity and can be classified as a Marine Migrant in the Estuarine Dependent subcategory. The intra-specific variation in estuarine habitat use indicates that the migratory behaviors in mullets are far more complex than previously known.

This paper describes the size-selective predation on Limnoperna fortunei (Dunker, 1857) by Pimelodus pintado (Azpelicueta, Lundberg & Loureiro, 2008) from the time it arrived at the Mirim Lagoon basin (2005). Sampling was carried out using bottom trawl in depths of 3-6 m, from January to November 2005, and from October to November 2008. Pimelodus pintado began to prey upon L. fortunei soon after its arrival (austral spring of 2005). On the spring of 2008, L. fortunei was found to be the most important food item of P. pintado. The variation in length of the mussels (0.7-3.2 cm, with a mode of 1.3 cm) indicates that the species is now fully established in the system. Our data indicates that large individuals of P. pintado incorporate more mussels in their diets than small individuals. However, regardless of their size, P. pintado individuals predate only on small (<1.4 cm) representatives of L. fortunei. This prey size corresponds to a phase when the mussel is more mobile and readily available for fish. Larger, more aggregated prey groups that are attached to hard substrates are avoided by fish predators.

Elementos traço e majoritários foram determinados em mexilhão dourado (Limnoperna fortunei) coletados no canal São Gonçalo (Rio Grande-RS, Brasil). Digestão assistida por microondas em sistema fechado foi utilizada para decomposição das amostras com subsequente determinação elementar por técnicas espectrométricas. Os resultados mostraram que o tecido de mexilhão contém Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, V e Zn, enquanto que na casca foram encontrados os mesmo elementos, exceto Ag e Hg, evidenciando seu potencial como biomarcador. Neste sentido, estes resultados podem ser utilizados para estabelecer um panorama inicial e contribuir para futuros estudos relacionados a contaminantes inorgânicos na área estudada.

Major and trace element content was determined in golden mussel (Limnoperna fortunei) collected in the São Gonçalo Channel (Rio Grande City, Brazil). A microwave-assisted digestion procedure in closed vessels was applied to mussel decomposition and subsequent determination of elements by spectrometric techniques. Results showed that the mussel tissue contains Ag, Al, As, B, Ba, Ca, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mg, Mn, Mo, P, Pb, S, Sn, Sr, Ti, V and Zn, while the same elements (except Ag and Hg) were quantified in its shell, demonstrating its potential as a biomarker. In this sense, these results can be used to establish an initial view and to contribute to further studies related to element contamination in the area under study.

The Plata pompano, Trachinotus marginatus (Cuvier, 1832), is an endemic carangid of the Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, occurring from Rio de Janeiro to Uruguay. This study describes the reproductive period, spawning type, the size at first gonadal maturation and the length-weight relationship of individuals sampled from landings of the artisanal and commercial fishing fleets in Rio Grande that operate along the coast of Rio Grande do Sul state, southern Brazil (~ 32ºS) to the Uruguayan border (~ 34ºS). Monthly collections from September 2008 through January 2010 yielded 274 individuals ranging from 142 to 444 mm in total length (TL). The gonadal development stages were defined according to the histological examination of the ovaries and the testes. The relationship between TL (mm) and total weight TW (g) was statistically different between males (TW = 0.000463*TL2.7655) and females (TW = 0.000361*TL2.8131), showing negative allometric growth for both sexes. The sizes at first maturity were 187.2 mm and 254.9 mm for females and males, respectively. The presence of two modal groups of oocyte diameters suggested that total spawning occurred. The interpretation of the monthly variations of the condition factor and gonadosomatic index, which are associated with higher frequencies of the more advanced stages of gonadal development, identified the spring and summer months as the reproductive period, with a peak in the reproductive activity during November and January. These results suggested that the species has an opportunistic reproductive strategy.

A garoupa-verdadeira (Mycteroperca marginata) é uma espécie marinha geralmente associada a fundos rochosos e recifes. O presente trabalho investiga a dieta e estratégia alimentar de uma população da garoupa-verdadeira que habita um longo (4,5 km) par de molhes de pedra na desembocadura do estuário da laguna dos Patos, sul do Brasil. Não há trabalhos anteriores realizados nesse tipo de habitat construído pelo homem e este trabalho fornece uma base de comparação com estudos de dieta de outras populações da garoupa-verdadeira ocorrendo em habitats naturais. De modo similar ao encontrado em estudos prévios realizados em substratos naturais, caranguejos e peixes foram as principais categorias de alimento consumidas (%IRI = 85,1 e %IRI = 12,6, respectivamente), enquanto camarões e moluscos tiveram menor importância na dieta (%IRI = 1,9 e %IRI = 0,4, respectivamente). Como reportado anteriormente para populações de garoupa-verdadeira que habitam recifes e fundos rochosos, o presente trabalho revelou marcadas mudanças na dieta em função do tamanho da espécie. Siri-azul e peixes tornam-se gradativamente mais importantes na dieta de indivíduos maiores (> 500 mm de comprimento total, CT). Finalmente, foi observado que a população de garoupa-verdadeira teve uma estratégia alimentar generalista com uma elevada variação entre indivíduos no consumo de presas. Essa estratégia permaneceu similar ao longo do aumento em tamanho da espécie. Os resultados do presente trabalho sugerem que substratos rochosos estabelecidos pelo homem propiciam locais de alimentação adequados para a garoupa-verdadeira no sul do Brasil e que poderiam ser usados como ferramentas adicionais nos esforços de conservação dessa espécie ameaçada.

The dusky grouper (Mycteroperca marginata) is a marine species usually associated with rocky bottoms and reefs. The present work investigated the diet and feeding strategy of a dusky grouper population inhabiting a 4.5 km long pair of rocky jetties located in the mouth of Patos Lagoon estuary. No prior research has been conducted in such man-made habitat and the current study provides a basis for comparative studies on the diet of the dusky grouper populations inhabiting natural vs. man-made rocky habitats. Similarly with previous studies on natural substrates, crabs and fishes were the main food categories consumed (%IRI = 85.1 and %IRI = 12.6, respectively), whereas shrimps and mollusks had lower importance in the diet (%IRI = 1.9 and 0.4, respectively). As previously reported for dusky grouper populations inhabiting reefs and rocky bottoms, the present work revealed conspicuous size related dietary shifts. Blue crabs and fishes become increasingly important food items in the diet of larger individuals (> 500 mm, TL). Finally, it was found that the studied dusky population has a generalist feeding strategy with a high between-individual variation in prey consumption. Such strategy remained similar across the size increment of the species. Our findings suggest that man-made rocky substrates provide suitable feeding grounds for the dusky grouper in southern Brazil and could be used as an additional tool in the conservation efforts of this endangered species.

A garoupa-verdadeira, Mycteroperca marginata, é uma espécie de importância comercial que atualmente é considerada como ameaçada mundialmente e sobre-explotada no Brasil. Embora sua biologia reprodutiva tenha sido estudada em outras regiões, nenhuma informação está disponível sobre populações que habitam o extremo sul da sua distribuição na costa brasileira. O presente trabalho investiga a estrutura de idade, crescimento e reprodução de indivíduos que habitam dois molhes de pedra, com cerca de 4,5 km de extensão cada, localizados na desembocadura da laguna dos Patos no município de Rio Grande, no Atlântico Sudoeste. Foram analisados 130 indivíduos obtidos entre fevereiro de 2007 e maio de 2009, com comprimento total entre 260 e 800 mm. O coeficiente de crescimento no presente estudo (K: 0,069) foi inferior aos valores reportados para oMediterrâneo (0,087) e sudeste da África (0,09). Essa diferença pode estar relacionada a temperaturas médias maiores nessas regiões comparadas ao presente local de estudo ou devido a menor qualidade de habitat em termo de abrigos para os indivíduos de garoupa-verdadeira estabelecerem seus territórios. Análises microscópicas dos ovários dos indivíduos durante esses três anos de amostragens revelaram somente a ocorrência de indivíduos imaturos e fêmeas em repouso. A ausência de indivíduos ovados ou em pós-desova, associada com baixos valores do IGS (<0,2), ao longo de todos os meses de coleta, indica que a garoupa-verdadeira não utiliza esse substrato rochoso construído pelo homem como um local de desova. A estimativa de um L50 de 451,3 mm indica que a maioria dos indivíduos capturados nessa região é imatura. Pressão de pesca sobre indivíduos imaturos, associada com a sua lenta taxa de crescimento e complexo modo reprodutivo, ameaça a sustentabilidade da atual pesca da garoupa-verdadeira na área de estudo.

The dusky grouper, Mycteroperca marginata, is an important commercial marine fish that is currently considered an endangered species worldwide and listed as overexploited in Brazil. Although its reproductive biology has been studied elsewhere, no information is available for populations in its southernmost distribution limit on the Brazilian coast. The present work investigates age structure, growth and reproduction of individuals inhabiting a pair of rocky jetties, about 4.5 km long each, located in the mouth of Patos Lagoon in the municipality of Rio Grande, in the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. A total of 130 individuals obtained between February 2007 and May 2009 were analyzed, with total length ranging from 260 to 800 mm. The growth coefficient found in the present study (K: 0.069) was lower than values reported for dusky grouper populations from the Mediterranean Sea (0.087) and southeast Africa (0.09). This difference could be related to higher average water temperatures in these regions compared to the current study site or due to poorer habitat quality in terms of the shelters available for dusky grouper individuals to establish their territories. Microscopic ovarian analyses of individuals during three years of sampling revealed only the occurrence of immature and resting females. The absence of ripe or post-spawning individuals, associated with low GSI values (<0.2) over the studied months, indicates that the dusky grouper did not use this man-made rocky substrate as a spawning site. The current L50 estimate of 451.3 mm indicates that most individuals captured in this area are immature. Such fishing pressure on immature specimens, associated with its slow growth rates and complex reproductive characteristics, threatens sustainability of the current dusky grouper fishery at the study site.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estudar o comportamento da precipitação pluvial no período da estação chuvosa na região de Diamantina, MG. Dados de precipitação pluviométrica mensal, da série histórica de 1977 a 2006, foram utilizados e averiguada a probabilidade para várias classes de precipitação, através da função de frequência acumulada, usando-se a metodologia da distribuição Weibull com averiguação de aderência pelo teste Kolmogorov-Smirnov com nível de significância de 5%; de classes definidas em função de percentis predeterminados. Os resultados mostram que a estação chuvosa, compreendida entre outubro e março, representa 88% do total precipitado anual. Os meses de janeiro e dezembro apontam as maiores probabilidades de ocorrência de precipitação com 220,1 mm e 167,8 mm, respectivamente, a nível de 25% de probabilidade de ocorrência. O modelo de distribuição Weibull apresentou bom ajuste da série climatológica para estudos probabilísticos mostrando os parâmetros dentro dos limites estatísticos preestabelecidos.

This paper had as its objective the study of the rainfall behavior in the rainy season in the area of Diamantina, MG, Brazil. Monthly rainfall data of historical series from 1977 to 2006 were used. The probability was checked of several rainfall classes through the accumulated frequency function using the Weilbull's distribution methodology with adherence verification by Kolmogorov-Smirnov test with significance level of 5%, classes defined by predetermined percentage. The results show that the rainy season, between October and March, represents 88% of the annual rainfall. The months of January and December presented the largest probabilities of rainfall with 220.1 mm and 167.8 mm, respectively, at a level of 25% of occurrence probability. The Weilbull distribution model presented a good adjustment of the climatic series for probabilities studies, showing the parameters within the statistical limits established before.

The diet and foraging strategy of juvenile Menticirrhus americanus (Linnaeus, 1758) and Menticirrhus littoralis (Holbrook, 1847) were studied, testing the existence of trophic overlap between these species and within different seasons (spring and summer). Individuals were sampled using a beach seine in the surf zone near Rio Grande, state of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. Based on Morisita's Simplified Overlap Index and Bootstrapping technique, trophic overlap between species was considered high during the spring (Cik = 0.97 ± 0.07) and low during the summer (Cik = 0.37 ± 0.14). Juveniles shared the same food resources during the spring (FO of amphipods > 0.75), with the M. americanus diet presenting lower prey diversity (N = 7) when compared to M. littoralis (N = 13). In the summer, M. americanus presented a more varied diet (N = 13) than during the spring, suggesting a non-specialized opportunistic diet, whereas M. littoralis continued to show a diversified diet (N = 14). During the summer, M. americanus presented a generalist-opportunist feeding strategy, whereas juvenile M. littoralis tended to be more specialist.

Este estudo apresenta a composição de espécies, os padrões de distribuição e dominância, e a estrutura de tamanhos da assembleia de peixes em diferentes unidades de hábitat (zonas litoral, profunda e limnética costeira) da lagoa Mangueira, no extremo sul do Brasil. As amostras foram obtidas no norte, centro e sul da lagoa, entre os anos de 2001 e 2007 utilizando-se de diversos amostradores (rede de emalhe, tarrafa, rede de arrasto de praia, puçá e rede de arrasto de fundo). Um total de 52 espécies foi identificado, 46 na zona litoral, 33 na limnética costeira e 26 na profunda, distribuídas em 17 famílias, das quais, Characidae, Cichlidae, Loricariidae e Atherinopsidae foram as mais diversas. As espécies dominantes somaram 91,1 %, 92,9 % e 82,7 % dos indivíduos capturados nas zonas litoral, profunda e limnética costeira respectivamente. A zona litoral é constituída de pequenos peixes, quase 70 % entre 25 e 50 mm de comprimento. Os padrões de dominância mostraram que, nesta zona, 19,5 % das espécies foram dominantes, embora quatro dessas também predominaram nas demais zonas. Na zona profunda, 7,6 % das espécies capturadas foram dominantes, com tamanhos semelhantes aos da zona litoral. Para as demais espécies, os tamanhos se assemelham aos da zona limnética costeira. A zona limnética costeira é constituída de peixes de maior porte, a maioria entre 150 e 200 mm de comprimento total, tais como os grandes caracídeos, o birú e os peixes-rei. Observou-se uma maior diferença na composição de espécies entre as zonas litoral e limnética costeira, com as espécies Jenynsia multidentata, Bryconamericus iheringii, Hyphessobrycon luetkenii e Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys dominando exclusivamente no litoral, e as espécies Oligosarcus jenynsii, Cyphocharax voga, Odontesthes perugiae e Astyanax fasciatus dominando exclusivamente a zona limnética costeira. A zona litoral apresentou diferenças na composição e dominância das espécies entre as porções norte e sul da lagoa. As 52 espécies registradas neste estudo representam uma alta riqueza de peixes na lagoa Mangueira, sobretudo quando comparada a outras lagoas costeiras do RS. Padrões diferenciados de composição e abundância de espécies parecem refletir características distintas dos habitats litorâneos amostrados.

This study presents the composition of species, the distribution and dominance patterns, and the structure of sizes of the assemblage of fish in distinct habitats (littoral, deeper and near shore limnetic zone) of the Mangueira lake, in the southern Brazil. Samples were taken in the north, south and central regions of the lake from 2001 to 2007 using a multi-gear approach (gillnet, cast net, beach seine, dip net and bottom trawling). A total of 52 species were identified, 46 in the littoral zone, 33 in the near shore limnetic zone and 26 in the deep zone, distributed in 17 families, of the which, Characidae, Cichlidae, Loricariidae, and Atherinopsidae were the most diverse. The dominant species summed up 91.1 %, 92.9 % and 82.7 % of the all individuals caught in the littoral, deeper and limnetic zone, respectively. The littoral zone was comprised of small fishes, nearly 70 % between 25 and 50 TL mm. The dominance patterns showed that, in this zone, 19,5 % of the species were dominant, although four of those also prevailed in the other zones. In the deep zone, 7,6% of the captured species were dominant, with similar sizes to the littoral zone. For the other species, the sizes resemble to the near shore limnetic zone. The near shore limnetic zone was comprised of larger fishes, the major part between 150 and 200 TL mm, such as the great characins, the toothless characin and the silverside fishes. A larger difference was observed in the composition of species between the littoral and limnetic zones, with the species Jenynsia multidentata, Bryconamericus iheringii, Hyphessobrycon luetkenii and Gymnogeophagus gymnogenys dominating exclusively in the littoral, and the species Oligosarcus jenynsii, Cyphocharax voga, Odontesthes perugiae and Astyanax fasciatus dominating exclusively the near shore limnetic zone. The littoral zone presented differences in the composition and dominance of the species among the portions north and south of the lake. The 52 species registered in this study represent a high diversity of fishes in Mangueira lake, specially when compared to other coastal lakes of RS. Differentiated patterns of composition and abundance of species seem to reflect characteristics different from the coastal habitats sampled.

Atividades de cultivo de camarão tendem a aumentar a taxa de sedimentação de matéria orgânica nos corpos hídricos receptores de seus efluentes, devido à excessiva produção de produtos de excreção e sobras de ração. Dependendo das condições ambientais, o sistema pode não apresentar condições de autodepuração, gerando um grande acúmulo de nutrientes ao longo da camada sedimentar e intensificação do metabolismo bêntico levando, muitas vezes, o ambiente a um processo de eutrofização e possível situação de anoxia. Utilizaram-se, no presente estudo, incubações in situ com câmaras bentônicas transparentes e opacas, para avaliar o metabolismo bêntico em uma área de cultivo de camarão no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos, RS. Ficou evidente a existência de uma clara interferência do cultivo nos processos de regeneração bêntica de nutrientes, incrementando os fluxos de nitrogênio (na forma de amônio) e fósforo (fosfato). Embora a interferência desta atividade se tenha mostrado de abrangência local e temporária (apenas 4 a 5 meses do ano), é conveniente salientar que ela ganha maior importância em locais rasos e de circulação restrita, como é o caso de baías e enseadas, locais em que o cultivo de camarão é desenvolvido no estuário da Lagoa dos Patos.

Shrimp farming activities tend to increase the organic matter sedimentation rate, by extreme inputs of excreta products and shrimp food (commercial shrimp diet) into the environment. In certain environmental conditions, the auto-depuration system can be surpassed, generating a high production of nutrients at the sedimentary layer as a result of benthic metabolism intensification. Consequently the system can be induced to a eutrophication processes and anoxia. In the present study, in situ incubations with transparent and opaque chambers have been used to evaluate the benthic metabolism in semi-intensive shrimp farming areas in the Patos Lagoon Estuary (pen enclosures). Existence of clear interference of the cultivation in the processes of benthic regeneration of nutrients was evident, resulting in increases of phosphorus (phosphate) and nitrogen (in the ammonium form) fluxes. Even considering that this activity has a local and temporary distribution (only 4 to 5 months of the year), it is important to call attention to the sediment oxygen consumption and the input of nutrients deriving from the regeneration of organic matter, which is enhanced in shallow waters and restricted circulation areas (such as small bays), locations where shrimp cultivation is developed in the Patos Lagoon Estuary.

A Estação Ecológica do Taim está inserida dentro do Sistema Hidrológico do Taim e foi criada para proteger uma região heterogênea e produtiva no sul do Brasil, abrigando uma diversidade biológica excepcional. A partir da análise de isótopos estáveis do carbono (delta13C) e nitrogênio (delta15N), esse trabalho fornece uma descrição preliminar da estrutura da teia alimentar numa lagoa representativa desse sistema, incluindo estimativas dos produtores primários que sustentam suas populações de peixes e a estrutura trófica vertical. Um total de 21 organismos (5 macrófitas, 3 moluscos e 13 peixes adultos), representando 16 espécies, foram coletados para a análise da composição isotópica. Os peixes tiveram valores de delta13C variando entre -24.30º/oo e -28.31 º/oo , com uma amplitude de variação concordante com as macrófitas (-25.49 e -27.10º/oo), sugerindo indiretamente que essas plantas poderiam ser uma fonte de carbono importante para os peixes. As assinaturas delta13C de Corbicula (-30.81º/oo) e Pomacea (-24.26º/oo) sugerem que fitoplâncton e algas bentônicas podem ser outra fonte de carbono para alguns consumidores. As razões isotópicas do nitrogênio indicaram aproximadamente três níveis tróficos de consumidores. O cará Geophagus brasiliensis foi um consumidor primário, enquanto o penharol Trachelyopterus lucenai e o cascudo-viola Loricariichthys anus foram consumidores secundários. Duas espécies congenéricas de joaninha (Crenicichla lepidota e C. punctata), o pintado Pimelodus maculatus, o lambari Astyanax fasciatus e o dentudo Oligosarcus robustus foram consumidores terciários. Novas investigações, incluindo outros produtores primários e consumidores e um maior número de amostras, deveriam ser conduzidas para propiciar uma descrição mais completa e detalhada da estrutura e dinâmica da teia alimentar no Taim.

Taim Ecological Reserve is located within the Taim Hydrological System and was created to protect a heterogeneous and productive landscape harboring exceptional biological diversity in southern Brazil. Using stable isotope ratio analyses of carbon (delta13C) and nitrogen (delta15N), we provide a preliminary description of the food web structure, including estimates of production sources supporting fish populations and vertical trophic structure, within a representative lake of this system. A total of 21 organisms (5 macrophytes, 3 mollusks and 13 adult fishes) representing 16 species were collected for isotope analysis. Fishes had delta13C values ranging from -24.30º/oo to -28.31º/oo , showing concordance with the range of values observed for macrophytes (-25.49 to -27.10º/oo), and suggesting that these plants could be a major carbon source supporting these fishes. delta13C signatures of Corbicula (-30.81º/oo) and Pomacea (-24.26º/oo) indirectly suggest that phytoplankton and benthic algae could be alternative carbon sources for some consumers. Nitrogen isotope ratios indicated approximately three consumer trophic levels. The pearl cichlid Geophagus brasiliensis was a primary consumer. Two catfishes (Trachelyopterus lucenai and Loricariichthys anus) were secondary consumers. Two congeneric pike cichclids (Crenicichla lepidota and C. punctata), a catfish (Pimelodus maculatus) and the characids Astyanax fasciatus and Oligosarcus robustus were tertiary consumers. Further studies including additional primary producers and consumers and greater sample numbers should be conducted to provide a more complete and detailed description of food web structure and dynamics within the reserve.

O Sistema Hidrológico do Taim é um banhando subtropical localizado no sul do Brasil que abriga uma diversidade biológica excepcional. Em 1978, uma reserva ecológica foi estabelecida para proteger parte dessa área do crescente impacto de ações antrópicas nos seus arredores. Os peixes tem sido muito pouco investigados nessa região. Baseado em coletas com vários amostradores durante vários anos (2001-2005), e em comparações com estudos prévios, esse trabalho fornece uma lista de espécies atualizada dos peixes ocorrendo no Taim. Também é apresentada a primeira descrição preliminar dos padrões de dominância nos principais lagos que compõem o sistema (Flores, Nicola, Jacaré e Mangueira). A análise comparada indicou a presença de 62 espécies de peixes distribuídas em 24 famílias, sendo Characidae (19 espécies) e Cichlidae (7) as famílias com o maior número de espécies. Seis espécies são registradas pela primeira vez na reserva: Trachelyopterus lucenai (Auchenipteridae), Hoplosternum littorale (Callichthyidae), Rineloricaria cadeae (Loricariidae), Eigenmannia trilineata (Sternopygidae), Odontesthes mirinensis e O. perugiae (Atherinopsidae). Aparentemente, o penharol T. lucenai invadiu o sistema na última década e tornou-se uma das espécies dominantes nas zonas pelágicas das lagoas. Embora diferenças nos amostradores não permitam comparações diretas, parecem ocorrer diferenças na composição de espécies e padrões de dominância entre as margens rasas e as zonas pelágicas dos lagos. Uma assembléia de peixes mais diversa, dominada por peixes pequenos (<5cm) ocorrem nas margens vegetadas e protegidas dos lagos, enquanto uma assembléia menos diversa formada por peixes de maior tamanho (>15cm) parece dominar as zonas pelágicas.

Taim Hydrological System is a unique subtropical wetland in southern Brazil harboring an exceptional biological diversity. In 1978, an ecological reserve was established to protect part of this area from increasing anthropogenic impacts in its surroundings. Fishes have been poorly investigated in this system. Based on a multi-gear sampling study encompassing several years (2001-2005), and on comparisons with previous fish inventories, we provide an up-to-date species list of fishes occurring in the Taim Wetland. In addition, we made the first preliminary description of fish dominance patterns found in the main lakes of the system (Flores, Nicola, Jacaré and Mangueira). Checklist comparison resulted in 62 fish species distributed in 24 families, with Characidae (19 species) and Cichlidae (7) showing the highest species richness. Six species are cited for the first time in the reserve: Trachelyopterus lucenai (Auchenipteridae), Hoplosternum littorale (Callichthyidae), Rineloricaria cadeae (Loricariidae), Eigenmannia trilineata (Sternopygidae), Odontesthes mirinensis and O. perugiae (Atherinopsidae). Apparently, the black catfish T. lucenai invaded the system in the last decade and became one of the dominant species in the pelagic waters. Although differences in gears hindered direct comparisons, differences in species composition and dominance patterns between shallow margins and pelagic waters of lakes seem to occur in the lakes. A more diverse assemblage dominated by small fishes (< 5cm) occurred in the protected, vegetated lakes margins. In contrast, an assemblage with lower species richness comprised of larger fishes (> 15 cm) seemed to dominate in pelagic waters.

A comunicação entre o sistema lagunar Patos-Mirim ocorre através de um canal natural denominado São Gonçalo. Em 1977, foi construída uma eclusa com o objetivo de evitar a entrada deágua salgada, proveniente do estuário da Lagoa dos Patos, para o interior da Lagoa Mirim. Os resultados mostraram uma descontinuidade abrupta na distribuição da salinidade e dos peixes ao longo daárea de estudo. Estações de coleta abaixo da barragem tiveram valores de salinidade acima de zero, enquanto os valores foram iguais a zero nas estações acima da barragem durante o período amostrado. Peixes marinhos e estuarinos (p.ex., tainhas Mugil platanus, M. curema, peixes-rei Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardinha Brevoortia pectinata) não foram capturados acima da barragem. Caso entrassem em abundância na Mirim tais espécies poderiam contribuir positivamente para os desembarques da pesca artesanal nessa região. Dessa forma,é sugerida a hipótese de que a barragem do São Gonçalo atua como uma barreira impedindo a entrada deáguas salobras e peixes marinhos e estuarinos para o interior da Lagoa Mirim.

The communication between the Patos and Mirim lagoon systems occurs via a natural channel called São Gonçalo. In 1977, a dam was built in this channel to prevent entrance of saline waters from Patos Lagoon estuary into the Mirim Lagoon. Our results showed an abrupt discontinuity in salinity and fish species distribution along the study sites. Sites below the dam showed salinity values higher than zero, whereas sites above had zero salinity values across all sampling periods. Marine and estuarine fishes (e.g., mullets Mugil platanus, M. curema, silversides Odontesthes argentinensis, Atherinella brasiliensis, sardine Brevoortia pectinata, and white croaker Micropogonias furnieri) were not captured above the dam. If these juvenile fishes could enter the Mirim lagoon in greater numbers, they probably would enhance catches in the artisanal fishery. We hypothesized that the São Gonçalo dam acts as a barrier hindering the entrance of salinity water and fishes inside the Mirim Lagoon.
